Claire is a proud New Zealand citizen having lived here in New Zealand for the past fourteen years and is one of our latest high profile fashion designers although she was born and raised in Shanghai China.

From a very young age Claire was exposed to the world of fashion. Her mother made all the clothes for her and her sister Mimi and Claire was taught to do all the finishing with her mother’s supervision and training and deadlines !!!!!!!!

Claire’s mother was also, and still is, a fashion model, her father established a successful fashion business in China while her sister Mimi is employed as the personal assistant to the owner of one of China’s major fashion chains. It would seem that the glamour goes back further still, as her grandfather owned several manufacturing factories and her grandmother Bai Mei was one of China’s most famous actresses.

This lineage is perhaps part of the reason why the dramatic arts and cinema in particular, has been a strong source of inspiration for Claire with her favourite actresses being Audrey Hepburn and Vivienne Leigh.

Claire’s retail shop at 3a O’Connell Street in the heart of the fashion district of Auckland City opened 5 years ago, featuring exclusively her own designs under the original brand name Anouk although this has since been re-branded to the eponymous “Claire Barker”.

Claire also now has her own exclusive work shop which gives her complete personal control over her production.

Much like Claire herself, her clothes are a little eclectic, supremely feminine and elegant, not to mention subtly sexy. Remarkably, her clothes are also very affordable, without her having to make compromises on the quality of her clothes or dimming her commitment to style.

Claire was initially an unashamed clothes “shopaholic” but was dismayed that there seemed to be a lack of choice between chain store brands and expensive high fashion, she was and remains determined to fill that gap.

Claire says that her mission statement is to create exclusive designer garments made from the finest printed silks and chiffons, woollens from finest cashmere and angora hair weaves designed in the most elegant classic feminine styles while maintaining their affordability.

Drawn right from the pages of classic folklore, Claire Barker's new collection "Part of your World" explores grown-up glamour – with an ascetic that's pure escapism. Built around her key "kaleidoscope" print and an idea of a siren coming ashore, a concept emerged where everything can be seen in a new light.

Using bright, key pieces with a palette any oceanic woman can delight in, our once-water-bound muse Ariel negotiates modernity as a human woman. Never far from her origins, a Claire Barker woman will enchant - distracting fallible mere mortals from their work and causing people to walk off ships' decks. With vital pieces in tones of sea bream and lilac, a summer's day couldn't be better.

Work wear is covered too in the collection; a siren has to earn her daily bread. Knockout look the 'Ariel' dress is a pure white dress with aquamarine brimming up in a stunning gradient. Inspiration from modern princesses Kate and Pippa Middleton feature in the collection, with dresses worthy for royalty – or for the races.

For younger maidens or anyone savvy, the more affordable range CB has many stunning looks. Symbiotic with Claire Barker but with a more casual flair, CB caters for an everyday siren with her feet firmly ashore.
